MPC-20 Low Engine Temp Alarm error

Post by robsinglehurst » Mon Jul 18, 2016 7:04 am

Hi,
Just trying an MPC-20 with the stock MPC-20 config (using PowerVision 2.1.10491) on a JCB engine. I have it setup up for Celsius (based in the UK) and am getting a Low Engine Temp alarm on power-up. Display is reading 23 degrees Celsius (which is ambient). I have checked in the menu on the MPC-20 and the Low Engine Warning Temp is set to 0 degrees Celsius.
What would be causing this alarm when the MPC-20 is getting valid info from the JCB ECU?

Thanks,

Hello Rob,

Are you looking on the "main" screen? The main screen shows a large RPM gauge, small Target gauge then three gauges horizontal of Oil Press, Eng Temp, Batt Volt. Is that where you see the 23 degrees C?

You could check to see if you have an analog input set to a Coolant Temp. The config will choose the analog input, if an analog input hasn't been selected for the parameter, then it will look at J1939 CAN.

Hi Sara,
Yes, I'm definitely on the main screen and this is the Engine Temp value on that screen that is now displaying 25 degrees C. The only analog input I currently have setup is 4-20mA Discharge pressure for the water pump pressure transducer, into Analogue Input 3.

Hello Rob,

It is my understanding that the Low Engine Temperature warning clears when you press the enter button. This seems to be an indication that the ECU transmits a value lower than 0 degrees C for a period of time during power up then transmits values withing range.

There are three timers in the MPC-20/MPC-10 standard config that help control when faults are raised. I think a Bubble timer could be useful in this situation. The timers are found in the Advanced Engine Settings Menu.

There are slots for five functions. The Low Engine Temperature warning is an example of a function. The bubble timer starts counting when a selected function goes active. If the function stays active for the whole time, the selected action will occur. If the functions goes inactive, the timer stops, the selected action does not occur.

In this case where the coolant temperature parameter is transmitted at a low value briefly then settles within a valid range, the bubble timer set to a time that prevents the Low Engine Temperature function action from occurring helps to reduce concern over a temporary situation.

Hi Sara,
I setup a 5 second Bubble Timer and the Low Engine Temp alarm doesn't appear anymore.
