USB OTG on PV780

Post by sgibsonhmc » Wed Jan 27, 2016 3:05 pm

Hi,

I would like to know if its possible to use USB OTG like I can on my phone on the PV780. The website says OTG compatible. (I'm sure there will need to be some programming)

An example of this would be using my android phone as a usb host and connecting a standard usb mouse to it for a controller. I wondered if this behavior is feasible on a PV780.

I'm already using the PV780 in a project for work and as a side project I would like to be able to add standard USB devices to it and convert an input from the device into a J1939 message for the equipment bus on a machine.

I know what I want to do can be done for a few hundred dollars and a usb host to j1939 converter, but id like to be able to do this without adding more devices and costs. I dont care about high costs of time programming, this is a project I will be doing as a hobby, and to further my understanding of all parts involved, that could become a real feature.

Hello sgibsonhmc,

Unfortunately, the literature that shows that the PV780 has USB On The Go is inaccurate. The PV780 is USB Host, which is shown in other literature, although I see USB OTG in several places in the literature also. Sorry for the misdirection. I hope the documentation will be updated soon to prevent others from taking time based on the inaccuracy.

The USB can be used to reprogram the display, read and write text files.
