Posted on: August 27th, 2020 by Barn3s No Comments

Engine Controls Systems was established in 2004 by Rudi de Beer and is located in Birchleigh, Kempton Park, Gauteng, South Africa. Starting out as a one-man business had its challenges, but commitment and pride in service excellence paid off and has allowed Rudi to be the proud employer of over 40 people today. In the past two years, ECS has appointed distributors in KwaZulu-Natal, Cape Town and Namibia.

We spoke with ECS CEO Rudi de Beer to learn more about how the company has grown and has been able to provide continuous support and uncompromising quality for their clients.

What advantage does your company culture provide the marketplace?

Rudi: As a Murphy by Enovation Controls product distributor, we became well known in the market for engine protection systems and supplying control panels to the engine OEMs. We soon realized that our clients needed us to provide a full solution for their equipment. ECS started sourcing uncompromising quality products to compliment the Murphy by Enovation Controls product line and became a distributor for Mobile Control Systems, an excellent throttle control manufacturer. In the following years, we became a distributor for many more products and became a one-stop shop. The name ECS has become synonymous to service excellence, uncompromising quality, market-leading innovation and customized development solutions all backed by the continuous support of our clients for their highly valued machinery.

What unique needs do your customers have and how do you solve them?

Rudi: ECS has a very diverse client base and is cognizant of the fact that every client has their own unique requirements. We strive to provide solutions with every application. Our control panels are built with high-grade stainless steel for coastal applications, and the same panel with polycarbonate for chemical applications. With every new project, we begin by consulting with the client and understanding their needs in order to provide the most effective package for his/her application. Being part of an environment where our client base is so diverse, ranging from pump applications, drilling, mobile compressors, underground mining and many more, we have become accustomed to solving complex problems, and our industry-leading solutions have established the ECS brand in the industry.

What is a competitive advantage you provide for your customers?

Rudi:  We believe the advantages we have over our competitors are the following:

– Well-known excellent quality product supply

– Stock holding

– Product knowledge and service

– Adapting our product according to client needs

– Custom User Experience development

– Workmanship excellence and superior standards

What trends do you find important for 2020 and how would you use Murphy products to address those needs?

Rudi: The last couple of years, we’ve seen our clients become more aware of technology, and because of this, we tend to design systems that allows them to know what their equipment is doing and where. I can definitely see ECS using more PowerVision products in the coming years. Sixty percent of our clients still use old technology equipment with mechanical-driven engines and drive trains – this is where we get to design systems to operate and monitor all parameters electronically. We drive productivity through technology.

Why do you tell your customers to use Murphy products?

Rudi: We tell our customers to use Murphy products because of the product quality, backup and service. My company was built with the name Murphy, and with more than 70 years of experience in the market. Clients trust the brand, and Enovation Controls is always looking for better technology in order to stay ahead in the market.

How does your company conquer complexity by integrating Murphy products into system solutions?

Rudi: We employ excellent software engineers, highly skilled to provide the best solutions for our clients. ECS designs and builds its own systems and harnesses based on client requirements which are installed by our qualified field service technicians. Our aim is to provide end-to-end solutions.

What is the most interesting use of Murphy products you have seen a customer use?

Rudi: One project we did a couple of years ago was a hydraulic test bench logging data while testing pressures and flow on pumps providing a report to the end user using a PV780 and an Intelligent Xpansion™ PDM. Recently, we designed a system for a hydraulic rock breaker which was fitted to a new Caterpillar excavator operating all functions from a PV1100 and a PDM.
